I stayed in Seaview one weekend with my friend Les who was renting a room from a woman Anita. She was totally cool and let me hang out at her house all weekend. We really hit it off. She has lived on Big Island for over 35 years and knew so much about the Island. In the 80's when lava flow hit the Black Sand Beach area she lost her house among others who lived in the area and totally wiped out a huge portion of this famous surf spot and tons of sub division.
She shared some awesome photos of her house going up in flames and lava destroying the neighbor hood.
It blows me away that this was only 30 odd years ago! I am certainly on a volcano. The weekend I was in SeaView just happened to be the 25th anniversary of a small community called S.P.A.C.E. (Seaview Performing Arts Center for Education) An eco-artist village in Seaview started by "A bunch of
jugglers in Cirque du Soleil who wanted to live in the jungle" as one of the founding members put it =)
SPACE is a village and a farmers market within the small Seaview Community. The Anniversary night was super local invite only. Because I had befriended Anita I got a ticket and it was great fun. Just like being at a small magical circus for the evening. Really odd and fun performers, some world class juggling as well. SPACE market on sunday is 100% local only and nearly all the vendors are people that live in SPACE village. The woman who makes juice has the most killer juice Ive ever had period, lilikoi pineapple ginger forgettttaaabouuuuttt it,
